Donald Trump will take office as the new president of the United States in January next year. He claimed to end the Russia-Ukraine war before the US presidential election.
This time the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has matched his tone. According to him, the ongoing war in Ukraine will "quickly end" if Trump takes office as president.
On Saturday (November 16) night, the British media BBC said this in a report, citing a Ukrainian media outlet.
President Zelensky said he was certain his country's war with Russia would "quickly end" after Donald Trump took office as US president. He claimed that after winning the presidential election, they had a 'constructive exchange' in the phone conversation with Trump.
According to the BBC report, Zelensky did not say anything about whether Donald Trump has said anything about his talks with Russia. However, the Ukrainian president said he had not heard anything from Trump that contradicted Ukraine's position.
Earlier, during the election campaign, the Republican candidate Donald Trump has been consistently saying that ending the ongoing global war, including Russia-Ukraine, is his first priority. According to Trump, US resources are being wasted in the name of military aid to Kiev.
The report also states that the US Congress approved a $61 billion military aid package for Ukraine this year. The superpower is also Ukraine's largest arms supplier.
According to the German research institute Kiel Institute for the World Economy, since the beginning of the war until June this year, the United States has sent $55 billion worth of arms or materials to Kiev.
Inside the US, however, support for arms aid to Ukraine is waning, particularly among Republican supporters. And during the election campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to end the war. However, he did not elaborate on how to do that.
In such a situation, President Zelensky said in an interview with a Ukrainian press that it is certain that the war will end quickly according to the policies of the team that will lead the White House. This is their vision and their commitment to the citizens.
He also said that Ukraine must do everything to stop the war by next year through the diplomatic process.
Incidentally, in February 2022, Russian forces started invading Ukraine. Since then, around 12,000 civilians have been killed in this Eastern European country. In this two-and-a-half-year-long war, Russian forces have partially occupied the four provinces of Ukraine: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.
The combined area of the Russian-occupied parts of these four provinces is one-fifth of the total territory of Ukraine. In addition, last Friday, the Russian forces made progress in the eastern part of the country.
