Martial law declared in South Korea

South Korea has declared martial law on an emergency basis.

President Yoon Suk-yeol made the announcement in a televised address to the nation on Tuesday.

He said the move was taken to protect the country from “communist forces.”

In his speech, Yoon Suk-yeol said, “I am declaring martial law on an emergency basis to protect liberal South Korea from the threat of North Korea’s communist forces and to eliminate various anti-state forces.”

However, the president did not say in his speech what specific measures would be taken to protect government governance and democracy.
